Woodside Health and Care Centre

ClientNHS & GCC

The new health centre unites primary and community care services, bringing together once detached range of facilities for the local community.

The site contains a car park and green roof cycle park which is framed by beech hedging, linking to a footpath connection through to Maryhill Road. A tree lined footpath will supply shade to the building and help reinforce the leafy feel on a tight urban site. The architecture creates an enclosed courtyard garden that takes full advantage of the southerly aspect created by the single-story GCC Dementia Care building.

The courtyard garden is used by the elderly and dementia sufferers and acts as an expansion of the treatment rooms providing areas of retreat and reflection and larger communal areas where patients can be led by staff. A large area of lawn is at the heart of the garden and is used as a communal space where groups can gather for celebrations. To the perimeter there are two circulating paths which guide people around the planters providing small walks for the elderly. To the perimeter there is an abundance of plants which help to enclose the garden and begin to screen the tall walls on either side. In this zone there is a small pergola and timber bench to give a place of retreat for patients. In order to stimulate memory and delight, sensory stimulus will be provided visually and aurally with fragrant plants, plants to touch and plants to provide contrasting colours.
