What is Building with Nature?

Building with Nature is an innovative benchmark for the design and management of green infrastructure in housing and commercial development. As well as our experience as designers working with this new standard, we are able to offer advice and assessment services through our in-house Building with Nature Accredited Assessor.

The Building with Nature (BwN) framework includes 15 qualitative standards, divided into 4 themes: Core Green Infrastructure Standards, Wellbeing, Water and Wildlife. The standards require evidence of how the project demonstrates the health benefits for people who live nearby, how water quality and quantity can be managed to maximise opportunities for amenity and biodiversity, and how we create places where nature can flourish.

BwN Accreditation can be sought at design and post-construction stages:

· Design Award – Recognising high quality green infrastructure at the planning and design stage of development.
· Full Award – Recognising development that has delivered high quality green infrastructure.

Our studio has three projects that have been awarded Building with Nature accreditation:

· New Brunstane in Edinburgh is a green infrastructure-led landscape housing masterplan & design code.
· NHS Forth Valley Hospital & Larbert Woods transformed a neglected historic designed landscape, and is now an asset that supports positive health and wellbeing rather than being just a place for treating illness.
· Queensland Court & Gardens is a green infrastructure retrofit in Glasgow, introducing sustainable drainage measures, adventurous play opportunities, community gardens and potential for food growing as well as encouraging sustainable travel.

NHS Forth Valley Hospital & Larbert Woods and Queensland Court & Gardens were also recipients of the Landscape Institute Awards Building with Nature National Award categories in 2020 and 2021. What all projects have in common is the generosity of spirit of those involved, aiming for more, for better, and a result so much greater than the sum of its parts.

If you have a project in which there may be opportunities to use green infrastructure to provide multi-functional benefits, and more efficient use of resources (with cost savings to you), then please get in touch and we can discuss how Building with Nature can help you get the best result and achieve recognition through accreditation.
