Larbert Woods Highly Commended Landscape Institute Awards 2016

Delighted to announce that Larbert Woods received a Highly Commended Award in the Landscape Institute Awards 2016 under the Added Value category. Thanks to previous LI President Noel Farrar for collecting the Award on our behalf from Simon Reeves.

This was a unique partnership that delivers multiple health and wellbeing benefits from NHS greenspace.

Larbert House and Estate dates from the late 18th /early 19th centuries, and Forth Valley Royal Hospital (FVRH), was built in the grounds of the 130Ha Estate. The remaining grounds had previously been left untouched and generally unmanaged, although highly valued by local residents for recreation. The brief was to transform and revitalise the woodland and greenspace resource surrounding Forth Valley Royal Hospital, bringing it back into sustainable management and safeguarding the designed landscape.

The aim was to encourage staff, patients, visitors and the local community to make greater use of the woodland and greenspace resource adjacent to the new Forth Valley Royal Hospital in Falkirk for health improvement, therapeutic activity, physical activity and relaxation.

Raeburn Farquhar Bowen worked with the NHS and Forestry Commission Scotland together with Central Scotland Forest Trust and Falkirk Council to secure external match funding, provided a delivery mechanism and secured long term management arrangements.

Larbert Woods is a high profile Green Exercise Partnership Demonstration Project, showing how NHS greenspace can be designed, improved and managed for multiple health & wellbeing benefits. This has encouraged a cascade effect for other NHS Estates.
